Barton, 22, spent the last three seasons patrolling the blue-line for the NCAA’s UMASS Lowell River Hawks upon graduating from the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

The Kelowna, BC native showed significant development and future promise in his first year of junior hockey. The Red Wings saw such promise and made him their 81st selection in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

In three seasons with the River Hawks, Barton has progressed into one of Hockey East’s best defensive players posting 36 points in 83 games and 49 penalty minutes.

“Seth’s trajectory is something not often seen in professional sports,” stated Kaizen Managing Director Michael O’Rafferty. “He took his time in minor hockey, mastering the levels before moving on and used his college years much the same. He is mature beyond his years and is ready to take on the added responsibilities of professional hockey. We are very excited to watch his continued development in Grand Rapids as he establishes himself in professional hockey.”
